A home contents insurance policy will cover most things you would take with you if you were to move house, otherwise know as your possessions.
This includes electrical goods, like televisions and computers, or personal items like furniture, clothes, money and valuables.
It will also cover furnishings, such as carpets and curtains. Any valuables of high value should be declared to your insurer, as some may be outside the cover provided in a standard insurance policy.
Most policies will cover loss or damage to your possessions while in your home by theft, fire, gas explosion, lightning, or escape of water from tanks or pipes, storms and flooding.
Your landlord is responsible for insuring the building itself – in other words the overall fabric of the building.
However, you have the responsibility to insure the contents or possessions, including furniture, that belong to you.
This will not be covered by your landlord building insurance.
