Friday 23 May is European Neighbours Day, an annual celebration which promotes the simple idea that we are all better off with a bit of social contact!
The celebration is now in its 14th year and since it started in Paris in 2000, it has grown beyond European borders. It is now celebrated around the world by millions of people “ 1400 partner cities, housing organisations and associations are participating in over 36 countries with 16 million participants!
Eileen Patterson, Director of Housing Services, Fold Housing Association said, ''Fold Housing Association provides housing, care and support to over 30,000 homes. We support the ethos of Neighbours Day. Good neighbours are the starting point for any community. They help individuals and families make connections with wider society. With our ageing population, knowing and being able to ask your neighbours for help, will become increasingly important for many older people, so it is important to recognise importance of neighbours in every community.''
Residents are invited to take part by making a simple gesture on this day across Europe. You could invite your neighbour for a cuppa, stop, say hello and make time for a chat on the street or organise an neighbourhood get together. It is up to individuals how they want to acknowledge the day.
