Hybrid Heating Energy Trials - 2024 and Beyond

20 Nov 2024

In 2024, Radius Housing are partnering with Phoenix Energy to find the most efficient solution to delivering affordable, sustainable, home heating for our tenants.

Our aim is to gather real-world data on new hybrid heating technology to inform future investment in our housing. We are searching for a scientific breakthrough to deliver more sustainable heating solutions for modern living.

To do this, we are working with a selection of tenants who volunteered to take part in a hybrid heating trial over the next two years.

In a similar, albeit smaller scale, trial in 2023, Phoenix Energy installed a hybrid heating system in a pre-2000 build property. This system was made up of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) and a Combination Boiler, along with a monitoring system to measure the heat energy produced and electric usage.

The hybrid heating system was optimised for efficient use, factoring in user comfort and cost, including pre-programming internal temperatures to 21°C.

The results of this short trial indicated that a hybrid heating system, used correctly, has the potential to significantly lower household heating costs.

Hybrid heat pumps provide a unique and affordable home heating solution.

  • Energy Efficient System
Two sources of heating ensures efficient year round use, all while operating at higher temperatures.
  • Lower Heating Bills
The efficiency of a hybrid heat pump system can significantly reduce household heating bills.
  • Easy Installation
Typical installations can take only one to three days to complete, with no need to upgrade existing pipework.
  • More Space
No need for an internal hot water tank, potentially freeing up space inside the home.
  • Instant Hot Water
The hybrid heating system gives instant access to hot water at anytime of day or night, all year round.
  • Reduced Carbon Footprint
As well as being more energy efficient, heat pumps will reduce the amount of household fossil fuel usage.

As society faces increasing demands for sustainable energy solutions, trials like this will play a critical role in guiding future housing and development strategies and empowering our communities to embrace greener technologies.
